Champagne – The World’s Most Famous Sparkling Wine

Champagne is the most recognised sparkling wine in the world and is often used as a generic term for sparkling wines. However, legally it can only be produced in the Champagne region of France using the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle.

• Grapes used: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier, Arbane (first three dominate 99% of production)
• Produced using secondary fermentation in bottle (Traditional Method)
• Minimum ageing: 15 months for non-vintage, 3 years for vintage Champagne
• Lees (dead yeast cells) create biscuit, toast and brioche flavours
• Vintage Champagne is made only in exceptional years from a single harvest
• Most Champagne is non-vintage (blend of multiple years for consistency)
• Blanc de Blancs = 100% white grapes (Chardonnay)
• Blanc de Noirs = made from black grapes (Pinot Noir / Pinot Meunier)
• Brut indicates dryness (less than 12g/L sugar; Extra Brut is under 6g/L)
