On 3 October 2026, the village of Areni in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor region will host the Areni Wine Festival, bringing together local wineries, winemakers, food, music, and visitors from Armenia and around the world. For anyone interested in wine travel, Areni is an intriguing place to experience Armenian wine at its source. Vayots Dzor is one of Armenia’s five recognized wine regions and is particularly associated with Sev Areni—also known as Areni Noir—an indigenous red grape that has become an important part of Armenia’s modern wine identity. Wine in a 6,000-Year-Old Landscape
The location adds another dimension to the festival. Just outside Areni is Areni-1 Cave, where archaeologists discovered an integrated winemaking installation dating to around 4000 BC. The site includes a grape press, fermentation vessels, and storage jars, making it the earliest archaeologically documented winery currently known. It puts the contemporary Armenian wine industry into an unusually long historical context. The same region that was producing wine thousands of years ago is now home to a growing number of wineries and wine tourism experiences. Tasting Armenian Wine at the Source Wine is naturally at the center of the festival. Visitors can taste wines from local producers and discover the indigenous varieties and winemaking traditions of Armenia. Vayots Dzor is particularly interesting from a terroir perspective. The region combines valleys and high-altitude landscapes, creating different growing conditions within a relatively compact area. For a wine traveler, tasting the wines here offers a chance to put those characteristics into context—not simply tasting an Armenian wine, but seeing the vineyards, landscape, and communities where it is produced. More Than a Wine Festival The festival also brings together Armenian food, traditional grape stomping, music, dance, and local cultural performances. It is as much an opportunity to experience the region as it is to taste its wines. And that is perhaps what makes Areni interesting for wine travelers. Event Overview
